Stress Relief – 5 Natural Ways to Help Release Stress

What is stress?

Stress is our body’s natural response to pressure, when we experience something unexpected, threatens us, or makes us feel out of control.

When we encounter stress, we produce a hormone called cortisol, which triggers a response that activates our immune system and helps us respond to dangerous situations.

When we are constantly in high levels of chronic stress, the excessive production of cortisol in our system can result in insulin resistance, weight gain, and type 2 diabetes.

Natural ways to help you deal and treat stress and anxiety:

1. Eat a healthy diet:

A healthy diet with enough nutrients of essential vitamins and minerals can help improve your mood and mental wellbeing. Low blood sugar, dehydration, and chemicals in processed food may cause mood changes that trigger a stress response.

2. Exercise:

Regular exercise is good for your body and mental health. When we exercise, our body produces endorphins that help boost your mood as well as reduce stress.

3. Get plenty of sleep:

Insomnia can be a common symptom of stress and anxiety. The best way to help prevent it is by keeping a healthy sleep schedule, not using electronics before bed, & avoiding caffeine before bedtime.

4. Don’t drink alcohol or smoke:

Alcohol and cigarettes may seem to provide relief from stress and anxiety on the surface, but they only work as a reprieve. Once the effects of alcohol or nicotine wear off, the symptoms can be exasperated.

5. Learn to meditate:

Meditation helps you remove chaotic thoughts from your mind and replacement with a sense of relaxation and mindfulness. Research suggests that 30 minutes of daily meditation can alleviate stress symptoms.
